If they have a website, they always want to know more about it and do it yourself SEO. It used to be in the late 1990's where you could purchase a domain name, launch your website and be easily found on one of many start up search engines. Fast-forward to the present, in last few years the World Wide Web (WWW) has grown to a network of computers that host over 8 billion web pages as of 2007. SEO basics can be broken down into two types – on page and off page. "On page" SEO takes place at the website pages themselves. Information related to particular keywords is strategically placed in the HTML code of the page itself along with keywords spread throughout the web page document staying within a determined percentage of use called keyword density. This keyword density is one of many factors used by the search engine algorithm to determine the relevancy of the web page to the search term. Many items can be optimized (adjusted, changed, manipulated or enhanced) including internal linking of pages, external links leading to your web pages, linking to external pages along with the type of structure, the type of web development program used such as Flash, the use of graphics, the addition of quality content, blog writing, and other items to help your website be recognized and indexed by the major search engines. "Off page" SEO includes the management of link campaigns, article submissions to other web sites, article submissions to traditional media, interviews given to traditional media, podcasting, press releases, pay per click, advertising banners, blog postings, forum postings, youtube, myspace, networking websites, etc. These two types of SEO used together make a formidable Search Engine Marketing (SEM) program and will help you improve the position of your website on the various search engines. Keep in mind that each of the search engines has their own unique secretly guarded set of algorithms they use so your SEM program will need to be customized for each search engine. Now you know, what is SEO. Questions or comments? |
