SEO DIY Basics Banner

There are over 8 billion web pages on the World Wide Web. Judging by the sheer number of web pages, in reality, there are about 8 billion web pages that aren't getting looked at. The public at large is looking only at a handful of web pages compared to the total of all web pages available. The reason is that only a few (few being millions) are popping up on the search engine results pages (SERPs) when users search the web. Studies have shown that most people confine their "clicking" to the first 10 or maybe 20 listings. Meaning if the information can be found on the Internet, it will be found within the first few results on the SERPs.

How does a web page or website get found on a search?

When you perform a search for specific information, the search engine looks at the words you have entered into the search form. It then takes the only the terms it needs and sends a bot (a program) to the area of the index that is related to the subject. The bot using a set of algorithms based on your search terms reviews web pages in the index to decide which web pages are to be ultimately listed on search engine results page (SERP). Generally, the exact match or the most relevant matches are listed at or near the top of the SERP where the less and least relevant matches appear in descending order toward the bottom of the list of results. In the example above, the most relevant matches are returned to the SERPs. Relevancy is really the "key" isn't it? To have your web site or web page found and clicked on, you have to be very relevant to the search term.

Why SEO my website?

Why you should consider SEO for your web site.

Adding your web site to the constantly increasing pool of pages is not enough to be seen by the public. Many web site owners have done nothing to enhance the possibility of being found by a search engine. You can have the most accurate and exact information on your web page regarding the search term from over 8 billion web pages, but if you are invisible to the search engine your web page is irrelevant and won't be found. You can create relevancy through Search Engine Optimization (SEO for short). SEO is the process where you aid the search engine bot or spider (another program used to browse your web pages on your web site) to find, view and index your web page properly.

The websites that are found in the first 20 listings are not there by accident. They have had the website and web pages examined and evaluated by professionals or knowledgeable do it yourselfers who have optimized these pages and sites for particular search terms. The SEO process takes the information on your website and enhances or changes your web pages through design and programming to "optimize" the process by which search engines can find your web site and index your web pages.

SEO techniques include "on site" where the design and programming of your web pages take place, "off site" where you would create links back to your site through various methods such as article and blog writing, link exchanges, etc and the use of Search Engine Marketing (SEM for short) which is a catch all phrase that includes pay per click (PPC), online marketing strategies, paid listings and even SEO. Sometimes the line blurs between SEO and SEM (to be covered later).

The better your web site is optimized for particular search terms through the SEO process the better your relevancy to the search terms you will be indexed for. And if your web site and web pages are some of the most relevant pages to the search term the higher your placement will be on the SERPs.

As more and more people are turning to the Internet everyday to find information, to search out products and to conduct business, you can see why having a website that can be found through the search engines is so important. Obviously, the higher your ranking is in the SERP listing, the higher the visibility for your website which translates into more traffic and more visitors, potential customers, etc. With people clicking only on the first 20 or so listings, it's evident why SEO would be a critical and necessary part of your overall marketing strategy for your website.
